Rhythmically Speaking 2013
On August 15-17 at the Southern Theater, seven dynamic choreographers will offer the community seven different conversations in physical rhythm. Bound together by the endless abilities of jazz and rhythm-driven dance to ignite interactions between people and music, Rhythmically Speaking 2013 features the following forward-thinking local choreographers:
Yung-Tsi Bolon & Laura Horn
Maura Garcia (visiting from Kansas!)
More information on each choreographer can be found at www.rhythmicallyspeaking.org/2013-show/.
Though the Rhythmically Speaking 2013 choreographers work within very different styles of jazz and rhythm-driven movement, all seven cite interactions among themselves and the performers and between the performers and the music as essential ways they use dance to communicate. From classic jazz to contemporary flamenco, and rhythm-tap to rhythm-driven modern with some campy character work and live music to top it off, the 2013 annual production presents seven unique outlooks on how interactions between people and music can drive the creation of conversational dance. The production will feature video, voice-over and live vignettes to give viewers a peek into how these elements inform the creation of rhythm-driven works with distinct voices.
As an organization, Rhythmically Speaking is igniting and uniting creators, viewers and students of jazz and rhythm-driven dance in the Twin Cities, leading the charge to elevate the presence of these forms in the community and beyond. Touted by Dance Magazine as 'revitalizing jazz and rhythm-based dance in the Twin Cities area,' the organization is proud to have supported 34 choreographers, presented 48 original and remounted works and engaged 150+ artists within just five years. The Rhythmically Speaking production has become an anticipated annual staple of the Twin Cities dance scene, bringing the community a taste of the area's best jazz and rhythm-driven choreographers.
Rhythmically Speaking 2013 runs August 15-17, 2013 at the Southern Theatre in Minneapolis.
