This is the spring conference of the Connecticut Social Work Oncology Group.  These conferences are held twice a year on pertinent topics for oncology social workers or other health care professionals working with oncology patients.  This experiential workshop provides an overview of a novel counseling intervention for patients with advanced cancer.

The presenter will be William Goeren, LCSW-R, ACSW, OSW-C
Director of Clinical Programs at Cancer Care.  

The Goal of this presentation is to provide the oncology social worker with an overview of the historical context of current LGBT identity as it influences and contributes to the experience of the individual LGBT client affected by cancer.  The presentation will also provide a summation of current research of LGBT cancer issues as related to each demographic in references to Minority Stress Model and Healthcare Disparities studies.  The presentation will provide a review of current best practices related to oncology social work and the LGBT communities affected by cancer.  

Objectives:

1)  Historical overview of the social, political, and psychosocial context focused on LGBT communities and the individual.  Fundamentals of theory, explanation of definitions and the meaning of identity centered on Minority Stress Model and Healthcare Disparities and its impact on LGBT community affected by cancer.
 
2) - Minority stress model, healthcare disparities, trauma, co-morbidities and stigma - the impact on gay men, and men who have sex with men (MSMs), affected by cancer and their caregivers:  the impact on lesbians affected by cancer and their caregivers; impact of the Transgender community affected by cancer and their caregivers.  
Objective

3)  The Oncology social worker and the LGBT person affected by cancer. You, your office and your clinic. Clinical advice for best practices, challenging belief systems, and suggestions for connecting to, and creating safety for, your client.
