They Do Not Know Harlem: In Communion with James Baldwin
"They Do Not Know Harlem" is an immersive dance-theatre piece that explores the intersections of blackness, queerness and HOME through the eyes of Transatlantic commuter and the seer who has seen much - James Arthur Baldwin. As we voyage through the constructs of home, we must sing a Gospel. We must dance the Juba. We then go tell it on the mountain. And so it is.
"They Do Not Know Harlem" is written and choreographed by Tristan Andre Parks, the child of Mary Robinson-Corley and Christopher Andre Parks. This work is further affirmation to know that Jimmy belongs to us all. Tristan is overjoyed to further debut this timely work in progress as a prelude to his residency at Duke University's Slippage Lab in May 2019.
this piece was produced in collaboration with young, gifted, and broke.
