Most of Neil Simons hit films (such as Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, Sweet Charity, The Sunshine Boys, and California Suite) began on the stage. He returned to his theatrical roots with his first and only farce, Rumors, in 1988. At a dinner party in Snedens Landing, New York, four nouveau-riche couples are ostensibly celebrating a 10th anniversary. Upon arrival, they discover that their hosts have been incapacitated by mysterious events that include gunshots. What ensues is a high-energy attempt to cover up a scandal involving the host, a New York deputy mayor.
