In celebration of Johann Sebastian Bachs 334th birthday, Blue Hill Bach will present Bachs Musical Offering. Harpsichordist Daniel Pyle will be joined by flutist Catherine Bull, violinists Anatole Wieck and Ryu Mitsuhashi, and Mollie Glazer on viola da gamba.|
Bach based the Musical Offering on a long and complex musical theme given to him by Frederick the Great, who challenged the composer to create a six-voice fugue on the theme. In addition to the Ricercar a 6, Bach wrote a three-voice fugue, a set of canons, and a trio sonata for flute and continuo, all dedicated to the king, a gifted musician who played the flute. The Musical Offering was the first significant work written for the pianoforte, which had been invented a few years earlier. Several of the canons are based on riddles that Bach inscribed above the melody.
Now in its 9th season, Blue Hill Bach presents historically informed performances, recordings and educational programs that explore vocal and instrumental music of the J.S. Bach and his contemporaries.
Bringing Baroque music to coastal Downeast Maine, we draw upon the wealth of talent in the region as well as visiting artists who specialize in early music. Involving young people in our activities is a priority. Students and emerging artists perform in our ensemble and as soloists, and in 2014 we began offering the Marville Young Artist Fellowship to a young musician who shows special talent in early music performance.
We strive to involve the community in our activities in as many ways as possible. If you are interested in getting involved, please let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
