Challah-Day
Members of Beth Israel Congregation are opening their doors to their neighbors, Jewish and non-Jewish alike, to teach them how to make challah, the delicious braided bread that is one of the highlights of Shabbat and the High Holidays.
This fund-raiser will help the tiny, 91-year-old synagogue the only one left in Columbia and Montour counties keep its eternal light burning.
Participants will also learn about the symbolic meaning of the bread and its role in the Jewish story.
Afterward, we'll enjoy a homemade meal of traditional Jewish foods, including matzoh ball soup, salad, apple cake, and of course, fresh-baked challah with honey.
Participants will each get to take home the loaf they make.
Class size is limited to 12 students. If at least six people end up on the waiting list, we'll open an afternoon session.
Tickets are non-refundable unless a replacement participant is available.
Can't afford the fee? Contact Treasurer Susan Schwartz at 570-441-2774. We will be offering some scholarships. You can also call if you want to participate but don't feel comfortable paying for tickets online.
Can't attend but would like to support us or the scholarship fund? Please send donations to Congregation Beth Israel, c.o. Susan Schwartz, 226 E. Fifth St., Bloomsburg PA 17815. Unused scholarship money will go to the synagogue's general fund.
