Providence Improv Fest X - Festival Pass
The Annual PROVIDENCE IMPROV FEST has been around for 10 years, and in celebration, it is running for two straight weekends: July 11-13 and July 18-20.  Performances and improv workshops will be held in downtown Providence at 95 Empire Street (formerly Perishable Theatre), and at 393 Broad Street (the Southside Cultural Center).
Over 40 groups from across the country are going to be included in this year's festival.    Helping to celebrate this 10th anniversary year are performers who, in the past, have contributed to the success and growth of the festival:  PIF headliners include Jill Bernard (from Minneapolis, MN), who last performed a one-woman historical musical; and The NY Neofuturists (from NYC), whose production "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind" involves performing 30 short plays in 60 minutes.  Appearing for the first time at the FEST is Magnet Theater, which creates long-form improv narratives under the direction of the legendary Armando Diaz.  Other returning high quality acts include Airwolf (NYC, NY), Zarzamora (Austin, TX), and Improv Boston Allstars (Boston, MA).  The FEST also welcomes new groups such as Sistine Robot (Baltimore, MD) and a number of teams from Rochester, NY.
Providence itself has a very strong showing at this year's FEST, thanks in large part to the creation of the Providence Improv Guild (or PIG), whose groups perform at the Southside Cultural Center.  Over the last year, PIG has built a system of classes and regular performance opportunities for local talent.  This has resulted in a significant level of enthusiasm and support for the craft of improvisation--so much so that at least seven PIG-fostered teams have made it into the FEST, and PIG was able to sponsor the appearance of FEST headliner Jill Bernard.  According to Melissa Bowler, Artistic Director of PIG, "Providence hosts one of the best festivals in the country.  Being able to have such killer visiting groups appear on our stage during the FESTas well as being a part of the FEST ourselvesis great improv juju for PIG."
