Repair Café
On Saturday, January 26, 2019, Sustainable City will host a Repair Café at Boys & Girls Club of Whittier, sponsored by Athens Services.

Register FREE and be entered in a prize drawing at the event. Three lucky winners will receive gift cards.

At a Repair Café, handy volunteer neighbors known as tinkers and tailors come together for a few hours to help their community save items from the landfill.

Professionals and hobbyists alike show up to fix clothing, electronics, jewelry, appliances, bicycles, and small furniture (something that can be carried in one hand), and sometimes the talent will include specialty skills like knife sharpeners, bee keepers and botanists. Watch this space for updates!

Visitors at a Repair Café line up with their items for repair (three items per person). After signing in, visitors are given Tinker and/or Tailor tickets for each item, which helps event volunteers direct them to the right repair personnel. Visitors sit with their tinker or tailor during the repair for neighborly conversation or observation.

Volunteering at the event is easy -- and you don't even have to have fixit skills. Volunteer registration includes Tinkers, Tailors, Greeters, and Closers.

The event takes place on Saturday, January 26, 10am-1pm, at Boys & Girls Club of Whittier, located at 7905 Greenleaf Ave, Whittier, CA 90602. Registration is FREE -- and includes lunch with us!

Event Updates:

Workshop alert! Jordan Salcido of Cleaner Greener Whittier will lead a kid-friendly creative reuse workshop at the Repair Café at Boys & Girls Club on January 26th. You'll paint a diverted waste tin can to make a colorful plant pot, add gravel and soil, and plant locally harvested succulents from Strub Avenue Community Garden. Jordan will also hand out milkweed seed packets to plant at home in your yard, and, while you create your work of art, she'll give a brief presentation on the special role that plants and butterflies play in the biome. So fun! And free! See you there!
