"The Mystery of Edwin Drood"
The Axelrod Performing Arts Center presents "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" at the Jersey Shore Arts Center on August 15, 16, and 17 at 8 PM and on August 18 at 3 PM. Norman Hart announces his return to the shore area as director of the production.
Tickets: $28 per person
Originally adapted into a musical by Rupert Holmes, Drood is based on the final and incomplete novel by Charles Dickens and allows the audience to decide the murderer. Once the audience votes, the cast has to quickly prepare for the chosen ending. The recent Broadway production has garnered five Tony nominations, including Best Revival.
Rather than imitate Dickens' dark storytelling style, Holmes created a play within a play where cast members play musical hall performers who are acting the part of Dickens' characters. This allows for greater levity and more musical numbers than the original plot could hope to achieve. The original production of Drood ran for 608 performances and won five Tony awards out of eleven nominations, including Best Musical.
Tickets are available at the door, by calling 732-858-8106, or at drood.brownpapertickets.com, and cost $28. The Jersey Shore Arts Center at Main Street and Main Avenue in Ocean Grove.
The Axelrod performance of Drood is licensed from Tams-Whitmark.
