University Settlement Beacon Program Emergency Concert Benefit
University Settlement's Beacon program is facing a potential funding crisis in the next year, with more than 50% of its current budget in question. A cut of this magnitude would drastically reduce after-school and summer camp services that have been vital to the community for over a decade, and force families to find other options, many of which are at capacity already. In response, Beacon is calling on parents, friends, neighbors and supporters to rally together for an emergency benefit concert on Friday, June 7th, from 7:30-10:00pm. All proceeds will go to support Beacon programming for youth and families.
This funding uncertainty is just the latest blow in a tumultuous year for the Beacon program. In the fall of 2012, staff and participants were displaced for over five months due to structural damage in East Side Community High School, the building that hosts the Beacon program. Shortly thereafter, the community was hit by Hurricane Sandy, which had devastating effects in the Lower East Side.
The benefit concert on June 7th will feature musical performances by X-Factor contestant Randy Class, Janderie Gutierrez, Jordana De Lovely, The Beacon Rock Band. There will also be dance performances, special participant videos, exciting raffle prizes, a silent auction and more!
