Work That Reconnects Weekend Workshop
Friends, I'm so thrilled to invite you to join in this life-changing weekend workshop over Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend. I'm honored to host Bay Area teachers Mutima Imani and Constance Washburn for a weekend exploring The Work that Reconnects. I hope you'll join us!
Over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, January 19-21, 2019, well gather to make our way through the healing spiral of The Work That Reconnects with embodied practices and community support.
Here's the healing spiral:
Personal Guidelines for the Great Turning by Joanna Macy
Come from Gratitude To be alive in this beautiful, self-organizing universeto participate in the dance of life with senses to perceive it, lungs that breathe it, organs that draw nourishment from itis a wonder beyond words. Gratitude for the gift of life is the primary wellspring of all religions, the hallmark of the mystic, the source of all true art. Furthermore, it is a privilege to be alive in this time when we can choose to take part in the self-healing of our world.
Dont be Afraid of the Dark This is a dark time, filled with suffering and uncertainty. Like living cells in a larger body, it is natural that we feel the trauma of our world. So dont be afraid of the anguish you feel, or the anger or fear, for these responses arise from the depth of your caring and the truth of your interconnectedness with all beings. To suffer with is the literal meaning of compassion.
Dare to Vision Out of this darkness, a new world can arise, not to be constructed by our minds so much as to emerge from our dreams. Even though we cannot see clearly how its going to turn out, we are still called to let the future into our imagination. We will never be able to build what we have not first cherished in our hearts.
Roll up your Sleeves Many people dont get involved in the Great Turning because there are so many different issues, which seem to compete with each other. Shall I save the whales or help battered children? The truth is that all aspects of the current crisis reflect the same mistake, setting ourselves apart and using others for our gain. So to heal one aspect helps the others to heal as well. Just find what you love to work on and take joy in that. Never try to do it alone. Link up with others; youll spark each others ideas and sustain each others energy.
Act your Age Since every particle in your body goes back to the first flaring forth of space and time, youre really as old as the universe. So when you are lobbying at your congresspersons office, or visiting your local utility, or testifying at a hearing on nuclear waste, or standing up to protect an old grove of redwoods, you are doing that not out of some personal whim, but in the full authority of your 15 billion years.

In this retreat, we will work through all sections of the Work That Reconnects spiral (Gratitude, Honoring our pain, Seeing with fresh eyes, and Going Forth). We will do daily mindfulness, self-care, and nature connection practices along with the practices of the Work with an emphasis on working through the double grief and trauma of environmental destruction and social injustice.
Join us for a retreat designed to give us a time to turn away from todays turmoil and confusion to build resilience and release the frustration and pain of the daily news and our Business as Usual world. The retreat is open to people new to The Work as well as experienced facilitators of the Work That Reconnects.
Come unleash your passion, creativity, and vitality!
The Great Turning towards a just and life-sustaining world is happening.
This retreat will explore the intersectionality of current events and empower us to do what is ours to do for the healing of our world, our ancestors and future generations.
"One of the most amazing spiritual, emotional and intellectual experiences of my lifetime. This retreat is a must for all those involved in the transformation of our world toward life affirmation." - Ann Aurelia López, Ph.D.
We face many life-shattering crises today: climate change, income inequality, social injustice, environmental destruction, institutionalized greed, to name a few.
These crises are more than we can bear alone, so let us come together to share our despair, our dreams, and connect with our passions to participate in Great Turning.
As teachers, parents, grandparents, business leaders, counselors, activists, and community members we need to talk about what is happening on the planet in ways that inspire action, creativity, and hope. We need to inspire ourselves so we can build community cooperation and resiliency to navigate the bumpy road ahead.
The Work That Reconnects helps us uncover and experience our innate connections with each other and the healing powers of the web of life, so we can discover our role in creating a life-sustaining civilization.
Pioneered by root teacher Joanna Macy in the late 1970s, this highly experiential and interactive work draws from systems thinking, deep ecology, and many spiritual traditions.
This Work That Reconnects Retreat gives us the opportunity to;
* Learn new stories and concepts to communicate and understand the challenges of our time. * Reconnect to the wonder and beauty of this earth. * Rediscover our joy, our creativity, and the gifts we bring to our communities. * Move through our grief and fear to our love and courage. * Find power in our interconnectedness with both the human and non-human world. * Shift our perception of what is possible. * Embrace this time on planet earth as a great adventure that is asking us to step up and be heroes. * Clarify our vision of how we can act for the healing of the world.
