The Economic Benefits Of Public Transportation
A passion for environmental issues and smart public policy is the driving force behind transit advocate Fred Hansens lecture for the Building a Better Bend lecture series. Drawing on his depth of experience with TriMet in the Portland region, Hansen will discuss:
- The role of high quality transit service in supporting a communitys economic development. - Portlands $6 billion investment in high quality transit development and how this has shaped compact, efficient cities that are easier to serve with non-automobile transportation modes. - How rising fuel costs and the movement of transportation dollars overseas have affected transportation expenditures and time. - Declining vehicle travel per capita, with resulting increased transit ridership, during a 10-year period in Portland.
Not only can high quality transit save communities money, it can become a defining element in a communitys identity. With the appropriate vision and leadership, this identity can bring jobs to a region and provide a major tourist amenity. Join Hansen in exploring the evolutionary process of Portlands transit system and how its benefits could be enjoyed in our own community.
