Event
Oklahoma!
Set against the glory of the expansive western plains, where the cowboy is set in opposition to the farmers who are fencing off their cattle range, two love stories emerge. Laurey and Curly are obviously in love but too stubborn to admit it to each other. When the malcontent farmhand, Jud Fry, asks to take Laurey to the box social, a series of events are set into motion. The relationship between Will Parker and Ado Annie shows Will trying to tame and marry Ado, who has trouble saying no to whatever man she is with, especially the peddler man, Ali Hakim. Creating such memorable songs as 'Surrey with the Fringe on Top', 'Oh What a Beautiful Morning' and 'I Cant Say No', Oklahoma brought Richard Rodgers and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein II together for the first time. The duo would go on to write nine Broadway musicals together, but none would be as important for the development of American musical theatre as Oklahoma! A milestone in its fusion of story, song and dance, the production even featured a dream ballet which revealed the main characters hidden fears and desires. Because of its popularity, it ran for 2,212 performances, a record for that time. Oklahoma became the standard for how musicals were structured for many Broadway shows that followed it.
