reasons to be pretty by Neil LaBute
reasons to be pretty
by Neil LaBute directed by Daniella Caggiano produced by Bedlam Ensemble May 15 - 19, 2013 The Little Theatre at The Secret Theatre
Bedlam Ensemble returns to the Secret Theater this Spring with a production of Neil LaBute's 2009 Tony nominated play, reasons to be pretty.
THE STORY
It's a regular day for Greg and his longtime friend Kent, when an offhand remark about his girlfriend, Steph, and her "regular" face suddenly upends his relationships with everyone in his life, thanks to Kent's wife, Carly. Greg's efforts to piece his life back together only make things worse, and the relationships of all four crumble into a mess of insecurity, deceit, and infidelity, begging the question: how much is pretty worth?
Neil LaBute's biting comic drama puts the final cap on a trilogy of plays that began with The Shape of Things and Fat Pig. America's obsession with physical beauty is confronted headlong in this brutal and exhilarating work.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR reasons to be pretty
"LaBute takes us to shadowy places we don't like to talk about, sometimes even to think about" Erin McClam, Newsday
"Mr. LaBute is writing some of the freshest and most illuminating American dialogue to be heard anywhere these days." The New York Times
"LaBute's judgment of his fellow men makes the Old Testament Jehovah look like a softie His talents go beyond glibly vicious storytelling and extend into thoughtful analyses of a world rotten with original sin" Ben Brantley, The New York Times
"No contemporary writer has more astutely captured the brutality in everyday conversation and behavior: That kind of insight requires sensitivity and soul-searching" USA Today
"It is tight, tense and emotionally true, and it portrays characters who actually seem part of the world that the rest of us live in" Time Magazine
"The playwright delivers the goods, in a work that's lively and compulsively watchable and that offers a fresh take on the eternal matter of achieving 'adulthood'"The Record
