RECSI November Dinner Program
Mass timber has grown to new heights with the completion of the 18 story Brock Commons Dorm at University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. Codes in the US are evolving and three new types of construction (IVA, IVB and IVC) have made it through the first hurdle of the IBC code development process. These have already been approved and can be used today in Oregon as a Statewide Alternate Means. They are scheduled for early consideration in the States of California and Washington.
Testing shows the material can easily meet a 2 or 3 or more hour fire resistance rating and has survived burn out of contents in full scale testing. This same technology can be used in low rise if a client desires a fire resilient building design. This presentation is an introduction to a new technology you are bound to run into soon.
Program Speaker: Dennis Richardson, PE, CBO, CASp Western Regional Manager, American Wood Council Mr. Richardson joined the American Wood Council in January of 2013 after 17 years of being a building official and is a civil engineer registered in California with private sector design and consulting experience. He has been active on several code development and education efforts and has authored a number of code changes on subjects ranging from simplified seismic in the 1997 UBC to a rewrite of the heavy timber provisions in the 2018 IBC. Dennis is a current member of the 2018 ICC Fire Safety Code Committee, a Past President of the Peninsula Chapter of ICC, and a graduate of UC Davis with a BS in Civil Engineering.
