Last spring, our first spoken word event, Word (R)evolution, featured Providence word artist Jared Paul and Baltimore's Taalam Acey. Jared Paul returns this year with Archipelago Poetry Project, featuring Jared, Franny Choi and Laura Brown-Levoie. ARCHIPELAGO POETRY PROJECT:
The Archipelago Poetry Project is a radical arts troupe which believes in the practice of contemporary performance poetry as one of the most powerful and necessary incarnates of the Oral Tradition. This tradition is a mosaic of messages and testimonies transmitted through song, story, folktale, prayer, ballad, and poem, carried on, remixed, and reborn throughout generations. The history of these accounts is older than written language and their diligence has never ceased being amongst the most sincere and effective means of human communication, expression, catharsis, education, and inspiration. In many instances the Oral Tradition was a community's main means of preserving cultural practices, events, and struggles. At other times it was the only alternative record to the accepted, yet not necessarily accurate, knowleage of the day. This record stretches out across the sea of history as perhaps the greatest archipelago the world has ever known. An innumerable chain of islands which collectively tell the story of what once was, what currently is, and how it all may have come to be. Join Jared Paul (internationally touring performance poet), Frannie Choi and Laura Brown-Lavoie (2010 Providence Poetry Slam Champion), for an electrifying three person performance art event seemlessly unifying poetry, storytelling, and song.
