The Women by Clare Boothe Luce
The Women, by Clare Boothe Luce
A cast of CTC alumnae actresses return in the revival of a play you can really sink your nails into!
Clare Boothe Luce's social satire and all-woman show was a smash hit when first performed on Broadway in 1936 and then in 1939 in the film version with Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell - a formidable cast indeed! Centered on a group of gossipy, high-society women in Manhattan who spend their days playing bridge, discussing intrigues at the beauty salon and haunting fashion shows, the idealistic, happily-wedded Mary Haines finds her marriage in trouble when flirtatious, manipulative shop girl Crystal Allen gets her hooks into Mary's man. Aided and abetted by her friends, a host of colorful characters who have romantic problems of their own, the play touches on themes relevant today - marriage and divorce, socioeconomic class, female friendship, standards of beauty and the role of the woman in the modern world. After all, it was the playwright of The Women who said, "I refuse the compliment that I think like a man; thought has no sex; one either thinks or one does not."
"The script is wicked, mercilessly funny, fast paced, razor sharp and filled with such memorable invective that you'll be quoting it for weeks and months afterward." - Fine Arts Center, Colorado Springs
