Stage Door Playwriting Workshop for Playwrights 14 and Up!
Founded by Stephen Sondheim in 1981, Young Playwrights Inc. is the only professional theater in the United States dedicated to identifying, developing, and promoting playwrights aged 18 and under: on stage, in the classroom, and in the artistic community.
The recipient of 2 Obie Awards, the NY Drama Critics Circle Award, the Margo Jones Award, 20 Newsday Oppy Awards, the Alliance for the Arts Schools and Culture Award, Young Playwrights Inc. has produced 31 seasons of theater, offering professional productions to 99 writers and workshops and readings to over 500 more; more than 90% of its alumni including Kenneth Lonergan, Rebecca Gilman, Kate Moira Ryan, Jonathan Marc Sherman, Noah Haidle, Carter Bays, Stephen Karam, Clarence Coo, Madeleine George, Keith Glover, and recent Academy Award nominees Lucy Alibar and Benh Zeitlin have continued writing, making their imprints on the landscape of the theater with productions at theaters around the world.
ABOUT THE WRITE A PLAY! WORKSHOP: This will be a participatory introduction to playwriting in which everyone will come away with new writing for the stage. Participating teachers will leave with a curriculum teaser that they can try out in their classrooms, and young writers will receive information on ways they can get involved with Young Playwrights Inc.'s national programs for playwrights aged 21 and younger.
