Maki Namekawa & Dennis Russell Davies: Music for Two Pianos, by Shostakovich & Stravinsky
Other Minds® brings Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa back to San Francisco to perform a double header of two piano arrangements by Shostakovich, including the West Coast Premiere of his own Symphony No. 4 and Stravinskys Symphony of Psalms.
Written in 1936, the full orchestral score of Symphony No. 4 was lost during World War II and reconstructed in 1961. Until that point, the composers two piano arrangement was the only version that survived. Stravinskys Symphony of Psalms was also composed around the same time, in 1930, when works were often heard in piano arrangements for four hands.
Since their first performance in 2003, Davies and Namekawa have been touring the world together with appearances at the Lincoln Center, Ars Electronica Festival (Austria), lnternational de Musique de Colmar (France), Festwochen in Gmunden, and the Ruhr Piano Festival (Germany).
