Valley District Dental Society - DENTAL CONNECTIONS Opiates, Vaping, and Street Drugs: The Perspective from a Dental Chair

THE TOPIC: This will be an interactive discussion giving a broad overview of the neuroanatomy of addiction with a specific focus on the impact of nicotine, alcohol, opioids, and other addictive substances on oral health. We will review SBIRT and its role in identifying those with substance use disorder. Participants will leave with an improved understanding of community resources available to help those with addiction.
THE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, attendees will: 1. Understand addiction as a chronic relapsing medical condition like diabetes, obesity, or depression 2. Learn about impact of other nicotine or marijuana delivery systems 3. Review state-wide prescribing patterns with opioids 4. Discuss evidence-based treatments for addiction
THE SPEAKER: Dr. Ruth Potee is a board-certified Family Physician and Addiction Medicine physician at Valley Medical Group in Greenfield, Massachusetts. She is a native of western Massachusetts and attended public schools in the North Quabbin region. She attended Wellesley College, Yale University School of Medicine, and did her residency at Boston University where she remained as an assistant professor of Family Medicine for eight years. In addition to practicing full- scope family medicine, she is currently the Medical Director for the Franklin County House of Corrections, the Franklin Recovery and Treatment Center, and the Pioneer Valley Regional School District, as well as the Chair of the Healthcare Solutions of the Opioid Taskforce of Franklin County. In 2015 she was named Franklin County Doctor of the Year by the Massachusetts Medical Society and is currently the Chair of the Department of Medicine at Baystate-Franklin Medical Center. Dr. Potee engages communities in discussions surrounding substance abuse through her wide-ranging series of talks.
