On a fine Summer day if you stand on Dunnet Head in Caithness, the most northerly point of the British mainland, you can see the Orkney Islands across the choppy waters of the Pentland Firth. At ten miles distance they look mysterious and to some eyes even a little magical.

The play chosen by Shute Theatre and Arts Guild for its production this Autumn certainly reflects the mystery and magic of the Orkneys and the people who live there, although some of the mystery is not only very real but even sinister.
Set in 1904 and first produced in London in 1915, the play is described as a thriller but such are the story-telling skills of the author that it is far more than that.

Mary Hayley Bell was an actress, novelist and playwright of some note; her best known work is probably Whistle down the Wind, in the film of which her younger daughter Hayley made her name as a child star. Her older daughter Juliet was also an actress and, as many will know, her husband was the much-loved actor and film star John Mills. All her writing was dedicated to him: our scripts have the dedication on the title page Again for Johnnie.

An experienced cast will bring the play to life with all the polish and professionalism expected from STAG productions. Susan Gunn-Johnson, Deborah Meakin and Barry Sindall return to our stage, as does Heather White in a small but scene-stealing part. We welcome Rob Smith making a major contribution in his first role with the Guild. Between them they capture the spirit of the Orkneys and gradually uncover the mystery at the heart of this dramatic and moving play.
