Getting the MESSAGe: Creating and sustaining graduate training for professional geoscientists at UW
The Masters in Earth & Space Sciences, Applied Geosciences (MESSAGe) at the University of Washington is unique in the nation. With a small group of talented and dedicated colleagues, we have built a degree program that emphasizes the triad of basic science, practical applications, and preparation for the profession, with a disciplinary emphasis in engineering and environmental geology. Initiated in 2012, MESSAGe now has nearly seventy graduates working in Puget Sound and across the country. A key strength of MESSAGe is involvement from the professional community, with dozens of individuals each year participating as guest speakers, internship hosts, informal mentors, and external stakeholders for graduate capstone projects. I will review the history of MESSAGe, our educational philosophy, and highlight some recent student work. I will also look at challenges ahead and present opportunities for additional community involvement. What do you think are the attributes of a great junior colleague? Your input is welcome as we discuss the future for professional geoscience education in our region.
Dr. Juliet Crider is Associate Professor in Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington. Before joining UW, she was a member of the faculty at Western Washington University and Bryn Mawr College (PA). She holds degrees in geology from Amherst College (MA), UW and Stanford University. Juliet teaches, advises, and conducts research in structural geology, active tectonics and related topics in applied geology. She is founding Director of the Masters in ESS Applied Geociences (MESSAGe) program at UW.
