Mammon, Moloch, and the False Maria: Fritz Lang's Metropolis and the Cult of Capitalism
Thu Sep 13: 8.15pm

"Capitalism is a pure religious cult," wrote Walter Benjamin in 1921, "perhaps the most the most extreme the world has ever known."

In this information-packed, entertaining slide talk incorporating moving images, multimedia artist and culture critic Emily Pothast will read Fritz Langs Metropolis (1927) side-by-side with Benjamins posthumously published fragment Capitalism as Religion to give analysis of the history and current state of the ubiquitous religion of capitalism, whose theology Benjamin describes as the expansion of despair.
