Measure for Measure
Measure for Measure is set in rural Missouri during the Depression where vice currently runs rampant and the laws have been allowed to sleep for many years. The too-kind Duke Vincentio is setting out on mysterious business and leaving the cares of state to his trusted minister Angelo, with instructions to enforce discipline as he sees fit.
It is considered Shakespeares most urban play. Its people are of the city. It also deals with a lot of issues that we are currently discussing in American culture: abuse of power, incomplete justice, change of administrations, sexual harassment among others. This play is very much about justice and mercy, how to legislate with morality, restriction, ethics, but has a lot grey as well.
