Southwest Theatre Productions (SWTP) proudly announces its First Annual Playwriting Competition. The top three finalists will each be given a stage reading in Austin, Texas on separate dates in spring 2019 at the Santa Cruz Theater. In addition, one or more entries may receive a full production, showcase or workshop in 2019 or 2020. Each will receive performance royalties for their event, including for the reading.
Submissions will be accepted beginning September 1st and will close on December 31st 2018. Although cataloged and read by staff as soon as received, scripts will be read by the judging panel beginning January 1, 2019. Staff may contact you with questions or clarifications prior to panel review. You may submit one revision for minor changes (technical, typos) prior to close. All entries will be notified of receipt.
Guidelines:
- Plays must be full length, or one-act plays over 50 pages.
- Comedy or Drama accepted, but keep in mind we're looking for relatable topics such as family, workplace, lifestyle, romance, prejudice, love and loss. Plays with a social conscience, and/or scripts based on a true story are of particular interest, but above all, great dialogue and story arc take priority. So if you have a differing theme but those two things are there, please submit your script.
- No Musicals, Childrens Shows, Farce, Melodrama, Fringe, Horror, or Adaptations.
- Cast must not have more than nine roles, nor less than three. Diverse casting whenever possible.
- Must be written in English.
- Playwright must own all rights pertaining to the submission.
- Only electronic submissions will be accepted.
- Submissions must include full script, character breakdown and a short synopsis or logline.
- Playwrights should include contact information in the body of the email submission.
- You may submit more than one script. There is a $25.00 submission fee per script.
- No feedback or written critiques will be offered.
- If selected and SWTP's production is the play's first production, SWTP will receive First Production credit in all future publications of the play as the world premiere.
