Join us as we honor longtime dance advocates Deborah Sale and Ted Striggles with the 2018 Bessies Angel Award. Toast this year's Bessie-nominated artists and enjoy remarks from very special guests.*

Tickets include hors d'oeuvres and cocktails overlooking Washington Square and priority seating to the awards ceremony, held at NYU Skirball Center immediately following.

Ted Striggles and Deborah Sale met through the National Association of State Arts Agencies when he was Executive Director of the New York State Council on the Arts and she was Executive Director of the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities in the Carter White House.  They have spent their lives together in support of the arts.

Ted Striggles started life as a modern dancer and has worked on behalf of dancers throughout his professional life.  He was a founder of Pentacle Management, chaired the board of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and wrote Fear of Filing. He was a principal author of Poor Dancers Almanac. He served as a member of the National Council on the Humanities in the Clinton and Bush administrations and on the board of SUNY Purchase. He taught the Economic Survival Workshops under the egis of the National Endowment for the Arts and has taught at various times at New York University, Benjamin Cardozo School of Law, Harvard College, SUNY Binghamton and other institutions of higher education. He received a Bessie Award for Distinguished Service to the Field and a career award from the Dance Notation Bureau. As a lawyer, he has represented dozens of dance companies and arts related foundations over the years.

Deborah Sale's long history with dance and The Bessies stretches back to the award's inception when she was Chair of Dance Theater Workshop. She currently chairs the boards of The Yard in Martha's Vineyard, the Community Service Society of New York City and Public Health Solutions. She is an Independent Director of ModernMD, a subsidiary of Blue Wolf Healthcare Services, LLP. She was Executive Vice President of Hospital for Special Surgery, Senior Advisor for Health Care for the State University of New York, Chief of Staff to Lt. Governor Stan Lundine in the Mario Cuomo administration, a Special Assistant to Vice President Walter Mondale and to the Mayor of New York City. She led the Arts and Humanities transition for the Clinton/Gore administration. Her previous positions in non-profit governance include serving on the boards of Dance Theater of Harlem, The Federal Indemnity Program, The Independent Feature Project, 2nd Stage and as Vice President of the New York State Council on the Humanities. She was a member of the governance committee of New York Live Arts in its transition.
