Compelling College Essays Workshop Series (Individual Workshops)
The admissions essay is the most personal part of the college application process and crafting it can be grueling. It allows you to highlight an individuality that goes beyond test scores and GPA, to reveal what makes you exceptional and unique. Knowing how to capture this spirit on paper can be a challenge.

The Ivy Bookshop's four-workshop series will lead you through the process of creating a compelling admissions essay. Sign up for the whole series or any individual workshop. By mid-November, you will have a persuasive essay that reflects who you are and what you have to offer. And you will learn about yourself, hone your writing voice and have fun!

Workshop 1 of 4 (9/10): Finding a Seed Idea to Nurture. Who are you? Using a variety of writing activities, the group will brainstorm ideas for their admissions essays before each narrows to a central concept and finds a seed idea to explore, nurture and develop. We will focus on strategies for generating material around one main idea.

Workshop 2 of 4 (10/1): Nurturing the Seed Idea. What makes a piece of writing powerful, meaningful and artistic? In this workshop, we will explore writing techniques and literary devices, and apply these strategies to developing the seed idea. You will learn and test storytelling techniques to enhance the flow of the essay and evoke an emotional response in the reader, while continuing to explore your topic.

Workshop 3 of 4 (10/22): Working with Structure and Finding Meaning. What makes you both unique and of service to the greater community? What does your essay say about who you are? Together, we will mine your seed idea for deeper meaning and incorporate these findings into the essay. We will walk through a variety of essay structures, and explore techniques such as foreshadowing, flashback and the cultivation of suspense. The goal in this workshop is to arrive at a working draft of the essay.

Workshop 4 of 4 (11/12): Polishing the Essay. Are you ready to submit? In this workshop, you will revise your essay, trying to look at your work with fresh eyes. You will practice revision techniques and edit for grammatical conventions, discovering how grammar contributes to the clarity of ideas and expression. You will have the option of emailing your essays to Sarah for final editing suggestions. If there is enough demand, this workshop will be offered again in December.

For instructor Sarah Shellow, writing is a conversation with the world. She has 20 years of experience teaching writing to elementary, middle, high school and college students, as well as to teaching fellows. She teaches new public school teachers about the art and science of teaching writing, and trains staff at the Baltimore-based Holistic Life Foundation--a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to nurturing mindfulness and literacy. Sarah has a master's degree in education from Bank Street College in New York City and a master of fine arts degree in Creative Writing from Goddard College in Plainfield, VT.
