SLO County Library--First 95 Years -- Joseph Carotenuti

April is National Library Month. Join Joe Carotenuti and LLCC in commemorating local literacy through an historical journey through the SLO County Library System and the major issues leading to and from its founding. We'll briefly explore California's evolving response to literacy as well as local efforts culminating in the establishment of the SLO County Library System on July 1, 1919. Our program will provide insights into one of the major pillars of any "progressive" community - its library.

A new publication, The San Luis Obispo County Library: A Brief History, will be available at the class for a suggested donation of $10. This donation will go entirely to the Children's summer reading Program. The publication is made available by a generous grant from the Barbara Baltimore bequest administered by the Foundation for the SLO County Public Libraries. This book was compiled from rarely seen documents and images from the new County Library Archives.

Everyone is sure to learn more about the development of the "library" in this county.

Besides being the City of San Luis Obispo's Historian/Archivist, Joseph Carotenuti has also spent the past several years organizing and indexing decades of preserved documents, ledgers, newspaper clippings and images from the beginning days and years of County library. The San Luis Obispo County Library: A Brief History, is a result of his efforts.
