Forward Motion: Conference
Forward Motion Physically Integrated Dance Conference
The Forward Motion Conference moves the concept of inclusion from the world of dance to the greater one we inhabit. Featuring members of the participating dance companies and other guests, the conversations during the conference will center around moving forward into an integrated future both in dance and beyond.
3:00pm Welcome Remarks & Opening Plenary: Moving Beyond Inclusion Adopting the name Moving Beyond Inclusion, a collaborative project in Europe led by Candoco Dance Company, the opening plenary moderated by Sara Nash, Director of Dance at the National Endowment for the Arts, features the four artistic directors of the companies performing in Forward Motion: Charlotte Darbyshire (Candoco Dance Company), Marc Brew (AXIS Dance Company), Dwayne Scheuneman (REVolutions Dance) and Karen Peterson (KPD). The discussion centers around the importance of training and exploration for both dancers and choreographers with and without disabilities as a means to expand and elevate the art form.
4:30pm Moving Forward: Inclusive Movement Workshop led by Karen Peterson
5:30pm Moving On: (Dis) Representation in the Arts & Media The panel moderated by Allison Schifani (University of Miami) includes artists in dance, theater, and film and explores how people with disabilities are represented. The arts and media have the power to change societal perspectives. While this representation has changed dramatically throughout history, increased visibility in the arts and media is necessary to move on. Panelists include Lani Dickinson (AXIS Dance Company), Jose Manuel Dominguez (director/writer/performer/Antiheroes Project), Hector Machado (Pioneer Winter Collective and Maven Leadership Cohort Member), Yuko Monden Juma (AXIS Dance Company), and Laura Patay (Candoco Dance Company).
7:00pm Moving In: Intersecting Disability, Sexuality, Race, Religion, Ethnicity & Gender Today, there are many social issues being raised around inclusion and equity such as ones led by the movements #MeToo and Black Lives Matters. Disability rights are not as widely discussed and often intersectional identities are excluded from these other movements. The conversation moderated by Nadege Green (journalist/ WLRN) places disability and ableism on the table as relevant and explores some lesser known movements and campaigns such as Disable the Label, #DisabilityTooWhite and The Future is Accessible. Panelists include James Bowen (AXIS Dance Company) Joel Brown (Candoco Dance Company), JanpiStar AKA Jean P Crespo Rodriguez (AXIS Dance Company), Annie Segarra (artist, activist, YouTuber), and Pioneer Winter (choreographer/dancer).
