Alceste criticizes the flaws in everyone he encounters, removing himself from the social conventions of French aristocracy. He meets resistence to this from friends and his love Célimène, who desperately push him to do as others do with niceties so he can rejoin society. The Misanthrope satirizes the hypocrises of aristocratic society while also criticizing human nature.
