Ballet history
June 18-21, 10am-2pm
Teacher: Prentiss Benjamin
This workshop investigates the history of ballet, with origins in Italy and Catherine de Medici, how it evolved in the courts of Louis XIV and its expansion by Jean George Nouverre as well as the most influential choreographers, composers and dancers. From experiential components, such as investigating the difference between major schools port de bras styles and a Balanchine tendu vs Vaganova tendu to a lecture portion, which involves watching performances, this workshop will elevate the dancers ballet expression.
Maybe day one starts with 2.5 hour lecture/ video on origins of dance that takes us up to romantic era-1800s. Then class that explores differences in style of a ballet class 200 years ago, 100 years ago and today. So plies 3 ways for example. This would be 1.5 hours.
Day two- start with class at 1.5 hours, then video/lecture on classical ballets of Petipa at 2.5 hours. Include ballet Russe and fokine ( up to early 20th century)
Day 3 class (1.5hours). And variation. Quintessential Petipa (swan lake, sleeping beauty?). We would work on foot and also consult videos, noting differences in style/choreography by different companies.
Day 3- class and then discussion of neoclassical. Balanchine and contemporary. Learn and observe snippets of neoclassical repertoire (Balanchine? Robbins? Forsythe?)

How Did We Get Here?
Discovering Your Dance Roots
Aug 1- 4, 11am-3pm
Teacher: Ila Conoley
Do you ever watch current dance and wonder how we got here? Did dancers thousands of years ago dance en pointe, writhe to electronic soundscapes, and execute acrobatic feats? Or, has dance slowly developed with the athletic ability of the dancers and the temperament of society? In this workshop you will identify your current favorite choreographer, academically and kinesthetically study modern dance ancestors, dance in new work created by Ila Conoley to be performed the final day, and analyze the roots of the new work. All of this taught in a fun, casual, engaging atmosphere focused on individual success!
