Consumers and Consumption Mini-Conference
The Consumers and Consumption section of the American Sociological Association (ASA) is excited to host a one-day conference on Friday, August 10, one day prior to the 2018 ASA meetings. The event will be held at Rutgers University-Camden, located just over the Ben Franklin Bridge from Philadelphia. Participation is open to all, whether or not you are a member of the section or of ASA.

The conference will feature a dynamic panel on Inequality in Trump's America, featuring sociologists Yasemin Besen-Cassino, Ashley Mears and Frederick Wherry. Panelists will weigh in on the place of consumers and consumption research in the current political, economic and social climate.

Yasemin Besen-Cassino is Professor of Sociology and Distinguished Scholar at Montclair State University. She is author of several books including The Cost of Being a Girl: Working Teens and the Origins of the Gender Wage Gap and Consuming Work: Youth Work in America. She serves as the book review editor for Gender & Society.

Ashley Mears is Associate Professor of Sociology at Boston University. She is the author of Pricing Beauty: The Making of a Fashion Model. Her current book project examines how women produce status distinctions for men in the global VIP leisure and party scene. She is Chair of the American Sociological Associations Consumers and Consumption section.

Frederick Wherry is Professor of Sociology at Princeton University. His books include The Philadelphia Barrio and The Culture of Markets. And he recently co-edited Money Talks: How Money Really Works with Nina Bandelj and Viviana Zelizer. His is currently finishing a new book, Financial Citizenship, with Kristin Seefeldt and Anthony Alvarez.
