SOUTH BEND WOMEN'S MASTERMIND
There is something magical that happens when women come together in community, wouldn't you agree?
This event is for women who are entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs, creatives, leaders, visionaries, artisans, change makers and solopreneurs...in other words, all women!
The goal of this gathering is to foster deeper connections than are possible at larger networking events where you may tend to repeat your elevator pitch and collect business cards. You will learn to network and collaborate in a new and meaningful way.
This is not an event to sell your wares, but rather a place to help one another become more energized about our various endeavors. It is about personal and community growth.
Our special guest is Mary Celeste Kearney. Mary is the Director of Gender Studies and Associate Professor of Film, Television, and Theatre at the University of Notre Dame. Her research focuses primarily on gender, youth, and media culture. She is author of Girls Make Media (Routledge, 2006) and Gender and Rock (Oxford, 2017), as well as editor of The Gender and Media Reader (Routledge, 2011) and two volumes of Mediated Girlhoods: New Explorations of Girls' Media Culture (Peter Lang, 2011 and 2018). She is currently completing research for her next book, From Nancy Drew to Gidget: The First Wave of Teen Girl Media, for the University of Texas Press.
Mary will invite us to consider "Sparkle and Contemporary American Femininity"
Sparkle has been a part of girls' media culture since at least Cinderellas magical makeover in Disneys globally popular 1950 film. Increasing dramatically since the early 2000s, such luminescence has become so prevalent in girls culture that it now vies with pink as the dominant visual signifier of youthful femininity. But girls arent alone in this glittery cultural moment: Women, too, are encouraged to sparkle, shine, and gleam via their clothing, accessories, and makeup. What are we to make of sparkle's ubiquity in both girls and womens culture, and what might it suggest about twenty-first-century femininity? This talk invites you to explore the connections between luminosity, femininity, and postfeminism in contemporary American popular culture.
We are looking forward to some rich discussion on the topic!
