Penguins in the Desert- An Evening with Author Eric Wagner
Penguins in the Desert- An Evening with author Eric Wagner Tuesday, June 26 6:00pm-7:30pm Free, but advanced sale tickets required The Royal Room, Columbia City
Seward Park Audubon welcomes Seattle author Eric Wagner to the Royal Room. Wagner will read from and discuss his new book, Penguins in the Desert, an account of a season in the remarkable lives of the Magellanic penguins of Punta Tombo, Argentina, and the scientists who study them.
For more than thirty years, University of Washington biologist Dee Boersma has worked at the colony there, which at its peak hosted at least one million birds. Now there are less than half that number of birds. Wagner chronicles how Boersma confronts this fact, and in so doing tackles some of the most urgent issues facing penguins and people today. What is the best way to manage our growing appetite for fish? How do we stop catastrophic oil spills? How will we address the looming effects of climate change?
But as Wagner spent more and more time in the field, other equally pressing questions came to mind. What is it like to be beaten by a penguin? Or bitten by one? All of which led to the most pressing question of all: What does it mean to know an animal, and to grapple with the consequences of that knowing?
