Q & A with the filmmakers after the screening

Six imprisoned men join a dance rehabilitation program that has never been tested before in the prison system. Upon their release they discover that the rhythm of freedom is harder to find than the rhythm of incarceration.

Inside her modest dance studio in upstate New York it is practice as usual. Susan Slotnick is preparing for a monumental work of her lifetime, 'Welcome to the World. For the first time, she will be bringing two groups of dancers from sharply contrasting demographics on the stage. One company, Figures-in-Flight 4 is made up of over a dozen teenage high school students from the Hudson Valley who danced with Susan since early childhood. The other group is the men's dance company, Figures-In-Flight 5, that was formed in the Woodbourne Correctional Facility.

But when the community hears about her plan to have formerly incarcerated men dance with young females, the project quickly becomes scrutinized. Audiences will watch Susan defend her name and earn the trust of the public so her life's work can continue; and observe Andre, Ray, David, Felix, Casper and Ali all men in their 40s navigate old relationships, secure their first jobs, and practice together as free men as they decide whether or not they can continue to dance outside the prison walls. In spite of their obvious differences in race, age, and background, we also watch the two groups share something that shines through in rehearsal and on stage: a love of modern dance and a commitment to mutual respect between peoples of all kinds.

With the rehearsals progressing in the background, the film begins to unfold deeper into the lives of all the six individuals through interviews and video diary moments. Through these recordings, the film becomes an intimate exploration of the lingering wounds of their incarceration and the healing powers of dance and brotherhood.
