The Big Gay Mexican, with his trademark unrepentant fabulousness, brings together artists for a night celebrating the cross-currents of Queer and Latinx identities. In a world where being queer is still unwelcomed, and in a political context that marginalizes Latinx people daily, Latinx-Q highlights and honors artists who find beauty and resilience in who they are.
Keilia Anali presents her short play What I Have Left To Eat, self-described as a love letter, a Fuck You, an apology, and hopefully a seed planting of self actualization. Flow artist Nezzie Garcia celebrates her body through hooping, exploring dynamic, flowing, and sequential movements rarely seen on a traditional performance stage. Spoken word artist Ellis Perez shares poetry examining the complications of race, gender, and language with a soft musical undercurrent. C(h)ristian Ybarra + Mimi Solis combine original songs and live painting, channeling their Afro-Latinx heritages into a shared emotional canvas. Beliza Torres Narváez stages y...pevertida/hi...perverted, the next iteration of a piece that has been a conference paper, sex ed workshop, and most recently a bachelorette party theme, examining childhood masturbation as a queer act.
Latinx-Q is hosted at Open Eye Figure Theatre, the site of Patricks Cabarets underground venue from 1989 to 1999. It will also be the final Mainstage Cabaret in the organizations history, effectively the end of Patricks Cabarets signature program. Patricks Cabaret will still be producing events for the rest of its Spring Season, including an Artist Education workshop, a school-based Teaching Artist Residency performance, a final Community Roundtable conversation, and the FUNeral on Sunday, June 3rd. Take every opportunity you can to come out and enjoy the sunset!
