Sponsored and produced by the Pennsylvania Firefly Festival (PAFF), these 4-nights of firefly programs and exploration will take place at 2 remote locations starting with June 8 & 9 at Hearts Content ANF Recreation Day Use Area, June 15 & 16 at Loleta Recreation Day Use Area*. PAFF volunteers will meet registered participants at 9:30 pm at the designated location and provide a short informational program. Then the guides will help locate, observe and identify the fireflies in that location. Space is limited to minimize impact and ensure a good experience for everyone. All participants are asked to pre-register ($5 per person) for the date and location of choice. |
Participants are encouraged to bring camp chairs or walking sticks. All participants should dress appropriately for the weather and a night in the forest. Long sleeves, pants and sturdy footwear are highly recommended. Families are welcome. However, this is a late night event and may be unsuitable for very young children. The programs are "Rain or Shine" events, but fireflies are highly sensitive to the cold and do not fly if the nighttime temperatures fall below 50 degrees. In the event of severe storms, the firefly viewing will be suspended. Flashlights should be covered with a red/blue filter. Pets, cell phones and flash photography are discouraged.
No rain checks or refunds.
PAFF is a registered 501(c)3 organization. Proceeds benefit the PAFF's mission to educate and raise awareness about all the fireflies in the NW Pennsylvania and support research of our interns.
*There is also a $5 parking fee at the Loleta Recreation Day Use Area paid to the Allegheny Site Management.
