Máire Ní Chathasaigh & Chris Newman with Ceol Corvus
Returning after an amazing appearance in the series a couple of years ago, this will again be one of those "special" nights at the Burren. Máire is from a big musical family from my area of Ireland, West Cork. (Nollaig Casey is her sister.) Her husband Chris is just an outstanding, creative guitarist, and together they simply rock live performances.
Take a listen below for an example: It starts as a gorgeous waltz, but watch til the end. Worth it.
Opening for Mairead and Chris will be a new group to the series. Ceol Corvus is a trio of Boston-area musicians who have long been immersed in the Boston/New England Irish music scene. Their style evokes the classic sound of the traditional Irish session -- something with which they are all very well-acquainted -- while drawing on influences and inspiration from the great Irish music revival of the past several decades. The Burren Backroom series is now well established as one of the most sought-after boutique series of trad presentation in the world. It has already created already dozens of memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was founded by well-known traditional musicians Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.
Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. As is the custom of the Burren, it is anticipated informal and dynamic post concert sessions will be a feature.
