Python Programming for Parents and Teens
Python is one of the most popular computer programming languages in use today with one very unique property: Python is used widely by professionals (in fields ranging from biology to robotics to medicine to startups) yet is very friendly to beginners.  More and more people are choosing to learn Python to get a taste of the power of computer programming -- and to have fun!

In this workshop, we will introduce the major features of Python and provide recommendations for freely-available Python resources you can use to learn on your own.  We will also provide a work packet suitable for anyone (beginner to advanced) which walks through an interesting "challenge problem".

This workshop intends to help parents and kids understand:

1) Who uses Python?
2) How is Python different from C++, Java, and Javascript/HTML?
3) What can you do with Python as a student?
4) What can you do with Python as an adult?
5) Which free online resources work for different people?

From a technical standpoint, participants will learn:

1) How to write and run Python programs
2) How to create different types of variables in Python
3) The differences between lists, dictionaries, and other data types
4) How to write a text-based adventure game in Python

All participants will be given a work packet to take home along with a detailed explanation of how to run Python programs on your computer and a list of free online Python learning resources.

The workshop will be taught by Robyn Allen, an MIT aerospace engineer, serial entrepreneur, and licensed Massachusetts teacher who runs Python workshops throughout Greater Boston and loves to share her passion for programming with people of all ages.  More about Robyn: http://www.enrobyn.com/   More about Central Inventions: http://centralinventions.com/

No prior computer experience required.

Open to the public.  Kids are welcome to attend with a parent/guardian.

Laptops are not required-- the workshop will feature activities you can do on paper.  Come try something new!
