This is a workshop on how to get started using the Raspberry Pi, a credit-card sized computer that runs Linux, and has GPIO and other peripherals good for hacking together small computing projects. For projects that have a networked or A/V component to them, the Raspberry Pi can be an ideal, inexpensive solution. The topics will cover setting up the Raspberry Pi, a brief introduction to Linux, and controlling the GPIO pins on the Pi from the shell, from Python and from Scratch (a GUI programming language that is SUPER-EASY to learn).
Suggested supplies for the workshop: - Raspberry Pi B+ or Raspberry Pi 2 B+ - AdaFruit Pi Cobbler (or equivalent) - Micro-SD Card (Class 4 or higher) - 4MB or higher - Micro-USB power supply - Breadboard, breadboarding supplies, LEDs - USB keyboard & mouse (*) - Monitor with cabling to go from HDMI to the monitor input (an HDMI 2 VGA converter may be needed on older monitors) (*)
(*) - If you don't have these things on hand, but you *do* have a laptop, we can set it up so the laptop acts as the display, keyboard and mouse using a remote desktop protocol VNC.
