Always wanted to add some singing to your improv but not sure how? Does musical improv kinda scare you but you want to give it a try anyway? In this Intro to Musical Improv workshop, students of all experiences and backgrounds will have a great time exploring rhythm, rhyme and basic song structures to gain confidence in their musical improv skills. Participants will have a ton of fun and maybe even surprise themselves as they work as a group to come up with fun and organic songs - right on the spot!
Prerequisite: Completion of Zen of Improv 1 or equivalent at another comedy school. NO MUSICAL IMPROV EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! :)
About Your Teachers: Misch Whitaker has studied, performed and taught improv for over ten years since her modest beginnings in Mission:IMPROVable at UMass Amherst; past credits include Improv Asylum NXT (2007-2008), Improv Asylum Mainstage (2008-2012) and ImprovBoston Mainstage (2013-2014). She is co-creator and producer of the musical children's improv show KERPLUNK! at Catalyst Comedy. Misch both performs with as well as directs Boston's Unscripted Musical Project (B.U.M.P) and Dirty Disney. Misch teaches and coaches improv for all ages at home in Boston and has also taught workshops at international events such as the Swedish International Improv Festival (2016) and the MamaCity Improv Festival (2018).
Patrick Parhiala cut his comedy teeth at the University of Massachusetts Amherst as a member of Mission: IMPROVable. Past credits include ImprovBoston Mainstage, Improv Asylum's NXT Cast, Boston's Unscripted Musical Project, Frannie (an improvised musical parody), and High Hamlet. He tours internationally with the group Big Bang and his musical duo show Pat & Misch Break Up. Patrick performs in Boston on the cast of Dirty Disney, a delightful contrast to his day job: super wholesome preschool teacher.
Arman Mohammad is a pianist and musical director from South Portland, ME. He studied classical piano for 18 years, participating in piano competitions around New England. He currently serves as the musical director for Break a Leg Theater Works in Plymouth, and Catalyst Comedy's Boston's Unscripted Musical Project. Arman studied music and biochemistry at Boston College, and when he is not on stage or teaching can be found working as a genetics researcher at MIT.
