Pottery Making Workshop with Ron Carlos
Discover the steps required to make your very own pottery from start to finish at a four-day workshop with Maricopa potter Ron Carlos at Pueblo Grande Museum in Phoenix, AZ. Students will learn the entire pottery making process: from processing raw clay, to paddle and anvil forming, painting, and culminating in a dramatic nighttime firing. The paddle and anvil technique used by Ron Carlos is a unique style indicative of the southern Arizona tribes; i.e. Maricopa, Pima, Tohono O'Odham.

This workshop consists of four three-hour evening classes taught by one of Arizona's most notable potters. All materials will be provided, including locally mined clay and natural clay paints. This will be a comprehensive workshop resulting in your very own polished, painted and fired ceramic vessel.

Biography:

Descended from both Pima and Maricopa tribes, Ron Carlos is an enrolled tribal member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. He produces paddle and anvil pottery which is a unique style of pottery making and indicative of the southern Arizona tribes; i.e. Maricopa, Pima, Tohono OOdham.

All Rons pottery is constructed from all natural materials. All clays and pigments are hand dug and hand processed into a workable paste. Also all his vessels are wood fired in an open pit using mesquite and /or cottonwood bark.
The pottery knowledge and skills were taught to him by the late Phyllis Cerna and her daughter Avis Pinon, both from Gila River Indian Community District #7 - Maricopa Colony.

Ron Carlos pottery journey began in June 1994 and for the past 10+ years has been demonstrating and teaching classes at various museums and Native American Communities throughout Arizona.
