Square Root Of Love
Artist John Sims brings SquareRoot of Love: Love and Politics to New York City and Paris for the Valentines Day Season.

Just in time for the Valentines Day spirit, conceptual artist John Sims will be presenting his ongoing love project and its latest iteration, Square Root of Love: Love and Politics- NYC/Paris event, featuring poets, writers, performance artists, musicians in both New York City and Paris. These two events will explore the various dimensions of love as it intersects with the ideas of liberty, justice and politics in the current cultural climate, leading perhaps to the question, where is the love? The SquareRoot of Love, first appeared in New York City, in 2010, in a duet installation and associated performance with the artist and Karen Finley, and since has traveled to various cities engaging the ideas of love with the help of art, poetry, performance, food and drink. Last year, Sims brought the project to Paris with series of events featuring a wine tasting, a film screening and poetry readings at the Berkeley Books in Paris. John Sims, a Detroit native, is a multi-media creator, writer and producer, creating projects spanning the areas of installation, text, music, film, performance and large-scale activism. His main projects are informed by mathematics, the politics of sacred symbols/anniversaries and the agency of poetic text.

He is currently completing Recoloration Proclamation, a 16-year multimedia project which explores the complexity of identity, cultural appropriation and visual terrorism in the context of Confederate iconography and African-American culture. This project features recolored Confederate flags, performative installations such as, The Proper Way to Hang a Confederate Flag, and the music project The AfroDixieRemixes, and the annual Burn and Bury Confederate Flag Memorial Day event. Most recently he organized a performative public hanging of the Confederate flag at Ohio University. And at the end of 2017, National Coalition Against Censorship listed him as one of the years Defender of the 1st amendment.

He has lectured and exhibited both nationally and internationally and his work has been covered in Art in America, Sculpture, Guernica Magazine, Transition, FiberArts, Science News, CNN, NBC News, New York Times, USA Today, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and the science journal Nature. He has written for CNN, Al Jazeera, The Huffington Post, Guernica,The Rumpus, and The Grio.
