ABOUT OUR PANELISTS

PETER MALINOWSKI, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BILLION OYSTER PROJECT:
Pete Malinowski grew up farming oysters with his parents and siblings on Fishers Island Oyster Farm. His passion for the environment and education led him to the New York Harbor School where he founded the schools Aquaculture and Oyster Restoration Programs and spent five years as a teacher. Pete is now the Executive Director of the Billion Oyster Project on a mission to restore a sustainable oyster population to New York Harbor and reconnect New Yorkers to the water. He continues to work with Harbor School staff and students, growing oysters and restoring them to reef sites around New York Harbor.

CARA CHARD, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CITY GROWERS:
Cara grew up in Connecticut, where her mother, a home economics teacher and backyard gardener, instilled in her the importance of nutritious whole foods.  While studying philosophy at Hamilton College, Cara became especially interested in the ethics of industrial agriculture, food distribution, and hunger. After receiving her MA in Education from NYU, Cara began teaching 9th grade at a public school in the Bronx. There, she married her love of teaching with her commitment to food justice as the schools community service coordinator, organizing student trips to volunteer in soup kitchens and community gardens around the city. In 2009, she was introduced to the world of urban agriculture while apprenticing with a rooftop beekeeper, and soon after left the school system to become education director at Added Value, a nonprofit urban farm. Cara was hired as City Growers first and only staff upon its inception in 2012, and built the organization from the ground-up. Since its founding, over 41,000 students from New York City have participated in City Growers food and farm education programs in Queens and Brooklyn.

NAAMA TAMIR, CHEF/OWNER, LIGHTHOUSE RESTAURANT:
Naama Tamir was born and raised in the city of Rehovot in Israel. She moved to NY in 2000 after completing her mandatory IDF service, and enrolled in Hunter College, studying Philosophy and Psychology while moonlighting in the hospitality industry. By the time she graduated, it had become clear that her passion lay in restaurants, sustainability and education.

In 2011, along with her brother-partner Assaf Tamir, they opened Lighthouse in South Williamsburg, a sustainable and forward-thinking restaurant. In August 2016 they opened a second location, Lighthouse Outpost, in Soho. In addition to the restaurants, Nama has produced the Umami Food and Art Festival, chairs the Sustainability Practices and Green Initiative committee at BaBar (Brooklyn Allied Bars & Restaurants), and co-founded No Free Lunch, a Food and Climate Change sustainability platform. Recently, she collaborated with the NYC Department of Sanitation on the reusable to-go container project.

ABOUT BILLION OYSTER PROJECT
Billion Oyster Project is an ecosystem restoration and education movement aimed at restoring one billion live oysters to New York Harbor by the year 2035. With the ability to filter water, provide habitat for many marine species, and help shield NYC shorelines from storm damage, oysters have the power to protect life in and out of the water.

Launched in 2014 as a proud partner of New York Harbor School on Governors Island, Billion Oyster Project has planted 25 million oysters so far, engaging 6,000+ students, 9,000+ volunteers, and 60+ NYC restaurant partners. The project's hands-on science and restoration curriculum is taught at 70 schools across the city. To follow the journey toward 1 billion oysters restored, subscribe to Billion Oyster Projects e-newsletter at bit.ly/BOPnews, and follow @billionoyster on Twitter and Instagram and @billionoysterproject on Facebook.

ABOUT CITY GROWERS
City Growers is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization based in New York City. Rooted in experiential learning theory, our programs use urban agriculture to close fundamental gaps in the experiences of city kids: exploration of the natural world and understanding of where our food comes from.

From field trips to after school, City Growers programs engage thousands of kids in farm-based learning each year through our hands-on farm workshops at Brooklyn Grange rooftop farms, summer camps, school garden residencies, after school programs, summer internships, and ecology workshops. Our annual City Growers Education Conference brings garden- and farm-based educators together to share best practices in the field. City Growers is committed to providing and expanding access to experiential environmental and food education to kids in New York City and beyond.
