Elfin Forest Walk
The Elfin Forest Natural Preserve, located on the southeastern shore of Morro Bay in Los Osos, is a 90-acre natural area adjacent to the Morro Bay estuary.  It is home to over 200 species of plant and over 100 species of wildlife.  Poor soil conditions, salt spray, and constant wind have stunted the California native Coast Live Oak and other plant species, making this a magical land full of micro versions of their gigantic ancestors.

Join us on this unique hike, which features a mile of wooden walkways that form an oval loop around the forest and protects the forest's sensitive habitat. Viewing platforms provide many opportunities to stop so don't forget to bring your binoculars and camera.

Hikers must stay with the group at all times.  INDIVIDUALS MUST SIGN A WAIVER IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE.  The waiver will be available at the beginning of  hike.

Note:  There are no restrooms for this 1 1/2 - 2-hour hike.  Please plan accordingly.

Park at the north end of 15th Street off Santa Ysabel in Los Osos. For wheelchair access, please park at the end of 16th St. and proceed to 15th St. along the boardwalk.  Walks begin on the boardwalk at the end of the 15th Street path. Wear comfortable shoes, long sleeves and long pants to avoid poison oak and mosquitoes. Please park carefully, avoiding driveways and mailboxes. Please leave pets at home. The easy paced walks last 1-1/2 to 2 hours.

Your guide on this walk is Pete Sarafian, known for his tireless work to conserve land on a local scale, working to preserve small tracts of land in Los Osos.  As Conservation Chair of the Los Osos/Morro Bay chapter of SWAP (Small Wilderness Area Preservation), he implements the Adopt-A-Park contract with the San Luis Obispo County Parks to act as stewards of the 90-acre El Moro Elfin Forest Natural Reserve in Los Osos.  For more than a decade, Pete has worked as an Elfin Forest caretaker and conservation educator.
