In 1977, Wendell Berry wrote "The Unsettling of America: Culture & Agriculture" which gave citizens a language with which to envision a more sustainable future, one that included stewardship of the land, and a return to thinking locally about the production and distribution of goods and services. In the thirty-five years since the publication of the book, communities have begun to meet the challenge of creating local, sustainable food systems. Farmers' markets are increasingly popular with consumers concerned about the production methods and nutrition of the foods they eat. Urban populations are realizing the essential importance of their countryside by establishing "green belts" within their cities, and enacting policies aimed at protecting and revitalizing surrounding farms.
In celebration of the publication of this book, The Berry Center, a non-profit organization established in 2011 to institutionalize the work of John M. Berry, Jr., John M. Berry, Sr., and Wendell Berry, is hosting a conference in April of 2013.This conference is entitled: From Unsettling to Resettling: What Will It Take to Resettle America? We are asking notable authors, community activists, farmers, sociologists, and agricultural economists to return to the book's principles and respond to the chapters in light of their knowledge and current understanding. Our goal is that the discussion and lessons resulting from this thinking will hasten a cultural shift toward sustainability as we envision and create our future. For three days - April 4th, 5th, and 6th - we will gather in Louisville, Kentucky at the Brown Hotel and at beautiful St. Catharine College in Springfield, Kentucky to share and discuss ideas. Participants will hear from panels of professionals well versed and knowledgeable in topics pertinent to addressing the issue of moving toward a more just, sustainable world.
