DCF WORKSHOP: Writing Thru Improv
WRITING THROUGH IMPROV -- Using techniques and experiences learned developing four Second City Chicago revues through improvisation, Andy will lead the class through best practices for transferring comedy made "in the moment" as an ensemble member onto the page. Topics covered will include "yes and" in the writer's room, working with a group to create work as an individual, fleshing out ideas, and overcoming writer's block. As the class will engage in both improvisation and writing exercises, it's recommended that attendees bring a laptop or tablet.
Andy Cobb started writing, directing, and performing as an ensemble member at Chicago's Second City, where he wrote four revues. His politically-themed sketch comedy has recently been seen on CNN, MSNBC, ABC, Fox News, NPR, Newsweek, Nightline, Current TV, Al Jazeera, and over 20 million times online. He's recently written sketches for Comedy Central's "Key & Peele," and his satirical video pieces have been called "genius" by Washington Post's Chris Cillizza and Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan, "brilliant" by Huffington Post, and "must-see TV" for beltway journalists and politicians by Politico. As a comic he's recently made studio appearances on CNN, MSNBC, Air America, and FOX News. As an actor he's had guest roles for MTV, ABC, FOX, Current TV, and appears and/or does voiceover in many regional and national commercials. Andy has written, performed and produced satirical advocacy projects for Brave New Films, MoveOn.org, SEIU, AAEI, Courage Campaign, and Healthcare For America Now. He recently has written and performed with Second City for shows on the "Art Of Satire" with Economist Magazine, served as "political director" and producer for Second City Online, and co-written a new Second City revue produced and developed in Laguna Beach, California. He teaches improv, video direction and writing at Second City Los Angeles, and directs the Second City alumni satirical video groups The Partisans and Public Service Administration, and performs with the improv troupe The 313. http://www.AndyCobbOnline.com
