AFP Luncheon, January 2018
Join us on Friday, January 26 for a great luncheon and education session, Whats a White Guy Know About Diversity? presented by Scott Cochran.

Scott Cochran believes that lack of diversity is the biggest cause of failure in organizations... profit or non-profit, regardless of industry. It has little to do with skin color, gender, or age. It has everything to do with diversity of thought.

Heres an example:

"Of course, history and backgrounds influence patterns of thought; someone raised in a low-income, high-crime neighborhood doesnt necessarily think like someone from a high-income, low-crime neighborhood because of experiences, but thats not always the case.

I spent 20 years in the business world before jumping to higher ed 10 years ago. One of my best business friends was a man named Derrick. Derrick was a 63 African-American who was raised by a single mother in a rough part of Denver. Im a 57 Caucasian raised in the south by traditional working-class parents. My dad worked a 9-5 job. My mom was a homemaker.

On the surface, Derrick and I looked very different. But we thought very much alike. His undergraduate degree is in math. Mine is in economics. He has an MBA from Dartmouth. I have one from Duke. In brainstorming sessions, we could finish each others sentences. If you wanted two different perspectives on anything from music to business to politics, we werent the ones you wanted to talk to.

Rob and I, on the other hand, were very diverse. From politics to music to personal interests... you name it. We were on opposite sides of the fence. We have had a tremendous friendship for 25 years, partly because of the consistency with which we live our thoughts and beliefs. But from the outside, we are very similar. Both white males, about the same age, in long-term marriages with children, similar educations and work backgrounds.

What I will talk about is seeking out those who think differently than you so that you can expand your mindset, grow personally and professionally, positively impact those around you, and live a full and meaningful life."

Scott Cochran is the President of Spartanburg Methodist College. Before joining SMC in 2015, he served for seven years as Dean of Wofford Colleges professional development program. Prior to entering the field of higher education, Scott enjoyed a successful 20-year career in U.S. and international business, with executive roles in finance, marketing, sales and operations. Scott earned a B.A. in economics from Wofford College and an MBA from Duke University. He serves on the board of directors for the United Way of the Piedmont and writes a monthly business column for the Spartanburg Herald Journal. Scott and his wife, Teresa, have been married for 30 years , have six children, one grandchild, and live in Spartanburg.
