Fire Recovery Walk at Keen Property
Fire Recovery Walk Keen Property, Sonoma, CA Meeting at 175 1st Street West, Sonoma Saturday, January 13, 2018
Join Sonoma Ecology Center staff to learn to interpret fire landscapes at the Keen Property, which burned in the October wildfires. We will be watching for special "fire follower" wildflowers, assessing burned trees and learning how to interpret fire landscapes. Discussing questions like, why did this happen? What does it mean? What do we do when it happens again?
Protected in 2002, the Keen property is one of Sonoma Valley's more unique and picturesque conservation easements. It protects the headwaters of Agua Caliente Creek, as well as ancient lava flows, elegant displays of native plants and stunning views to the surrounding Mayacamas Mountains.
This outing is for experienced hikers only, with difficult to moderate hiking over uneven, steep terrain with no trail. We may pass through brushy areas, with possible exposure to ticks or poison oak. Bring appropriate clothing including long pants and sturdy footwear, a hat or sunscreen, and plenty of water.
There is no charge for this outing, as it is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the District's work with a quarter cent sales tax. The Fire Recovery Walk series is also paid for by the Sonoma Valley Ecological Fire Relief Fund. Donations to this fund dedicated to fire education, active response, and prevention, are gratefully welcome!
