Born, Never Asked.
Born, Never Asked. is an auto-biographical acrobatic and aerial dance theater piece and gallery installation that addresses the complexity of international adoption, the importance of origin, and how US privilege glosses over issues of loss, race, genocide of native peoples, immigration, and citizenship. Extraordinary and captivating acrobatic imagery serves as a vessel of the difficult raw truths that international adoptees must face within an anti-immigrant political climate. This performance work is rooted in images of early ancestral body memory and is driven by the core question, how one can achieve wholeness in the face of conflicting loyalties between lands, languages, families and cultures?

Come early to enjoy interactive Gallery Installation in the Dance Mission Lobby.

Performers: Zoë Klein, Andrey Pfening, Hien Huyhn, Jeremy Vik, and Xedex

Tickets: $18 in adv / $25 at the door

ABOUT THE FIELD TRIP:

How can dance performance be a way of learning about adoption? We'll consider that question during this Field Trip at the closing performance of "Born, Never Asked."

When we want to learn about adoption, we tend to gravitate to certain resources: books, films, blogs, news, and people perceived as experts in the field. Dance performance is rarely considered as a way of learning about this complex topic. It is often seen as a temporary moment of entertainment, abstraction, or emotionality. This Field Trip invites you to see dance performance differently, as a unique and lasting kind of learning about adoption that is available to everyone.

This is an interactive, reflective and intimate experience limited to 12 people.  Participants will engage in pre-show discussion, then view a gallery exhibition and the Feb. 4th, 7 PM performance of Born, Never Asked. The artist, Zoë Klein, will join us for a private, post-show conversation. All are welcome, whatever your connection to adoption may be.
